Ernie Sarinana: Head of Baseball Operations

Approach to Baseball

Ernie considers it his job to develop great baseball athletes. Nothing gives him more pleasure than placing an athlete he has nurtured over a number of years, into a college to play baseball. It is this development focus that is at the core of his program and he measures his success on the success of the players he coaches and their passion for the game.

Background

Like most young boys, baseball became part of his life at 5 years old. Living in Southern California; a hotbed of youth baseball; he played through the Little League system being carefully mentored by his father and older brother. At 13 years old, the decision point for many kids, Ernie followed the Travel baseball route, always playing up to be on the same team as his older brother. His father at this time ran a baseball training facility and Ernie developed his love of baseball by helping train during the off season.

Playing Career

Ernie took his passion for the game of baseball with him to college where he developed his skills, playing for Cerritos College and Cal State Dominguez Hills. Ernie's playing career has taken him around the world, playing in the Japanese baseball league and in Italy.

Coaching Career

Ernie realized early on that his real passion was in teaching and helping others learn the game of baseball. He started his coaching career running the CA Rockies in his playing off-season at the Pro's School of Baseball in Walnut CA. He relocated to Northern California in 2000 where he has grown his baseball facility to be one of the leading facilities in the area, achieving major championship victories such as the USTSA Winter Championships. Ernie's extensive experience has enabled him to build significant trust with college scouts and has a high success rate in placement of athletes in college programs.

Anthony Resendez: Coach / Player Development

Sports Experience

Anthony's background in sports is rich. His playing career focused on both baseball and football, playing both through High School where he achieved first team all league twice. Anthony was awarded a sports scholarship to college where he was given the honor of scholar athlete in 2001.

Coaching Experience

Anthony began coaching football where he had a successful career achieving semi finalist position as a coach in the Peninsula Pop Warner division. He soon switched over to coaching baseball, initially coaching younger players in the Little League system. He achieved great success at Little League where he achieved back to back league championships in the Major's division followed by back to back TOC appearances. He also took the 12 year old Little League all star team to the District 59 Championship. Anthony's talents were soon recognized and he moved on to coach at the high school level where he performed a turn around at Evergreen Valley. In his first year he was able to turn around the Varsity team from a 7-22 record to a 19-11 record qualifying for the CCS. In addition to his coaching responsibilities at the Bulldogs, Anthony is currently the freshman coach for Bellarmine College Prep baseball team.

Developing Bulldogs

Anthony's job in the Bulldogs is to grow young players and develop them into great baseball technicians. He focuses on the fine points of the game, working on anything from precise position footwork to the field placement, based on in-game situations. Anthony can be found coaching the younger Bulldog teams at tournaments and consistently working on the fundamentals.

Gabe Barrientos: Coach

Playing baseball

Gabe has spent most of his life playing baseball. He played baseball from Little league through to the College level and then played for local teams in the Bay Area. More recently Gabe has been coaching, starting his coaching career at Overfelt High School followed by Piedmont.

Time at Bulldogs

Gabe works with the youngest teams and helps develop their game awareness during tournaments. He enjoys working with the younger players and helps work on the mechanics as well as their mental approach to the game.

Eric Mull: Instructor

Playing baseball

Eric starting playing baseball at the age of 5 in Little League. Once the little league system ended at the Majors level, Eric turned to the travel ball system to enhance his skills and prepare himself for high school ball. He played for many travel ball teams at the same time, trying to get as much play time as he could. This helped prepare him for high school where he became a 4 year starter on the Oak Grove Varsity baseball team. Hi success at high school ball enabled him to move to College ball where he was a starter at the colleges he attended: San Jose City College and Skyline Community College before transferring to Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tn. . Eric was privileged enough to sign a professional contract with the New York Mets and believes organizations such as ABD, and the Bulldogs baseball system are stepping stones to your long term goals.

Instruction at the Bulldogs

Baseball is a repetitive game meaning that hitting, throwing, and fielding are needed on a daily basis. I strongly believe you get out what you put in, and with hard work it makes the playing the games easy.

Edwin Quirarte: Pitching Coach

Career

Edwin Quirarte is a right handed reliever with the San Francisco Giants minor league affiliate the San Jose Giants. He was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 39th round of the 2005 MLB June Amateur Draft and then by the San Francisco Giants in the 5th round of the 2008 MLB June Amateur Draft. He has spent four years in the Minor leagues playing for the AA Richmond Flying Squirrels the Augusta Greenjackets and most recently the San Jose Giants. Edwin brings his pitching experience, professional pitching methodologies and personality to the San Jose Baseball Training Center to help our developing players take their game to the next level.

Bulldogs History

From its origins in Southern California, the California Bulldogs found their home in San Jose

The Bulldogs program of today was founded in Southern California as Ernie Sarinana wanted to develop his coaching skills during the off-season of his playing career. The California Rockies were based out of Walnut California and were built around a heavy training ethic run out of Pro's school of Baseball.

After three successful seasons, Ernie moved to Northern California and the San Jose area in 2000. Here he established the California Bulldogs travel team. Initially the Bulldogs were based around a field practice methodology and minimal travelling in the San Francisco Bay Area. As the program grew and multiple age groups were introduced the teams success increased from both a player development and competitive results perspective.

In 2005 The Bulldogs found a permanent home, an indoor facility that allowed pitching and hitting practice year round regardless of weather, as well as provide a base of operatins for the growing sports team.

In 2009 the California Bulldogs partnered with one of the leading College Development programs in the country, the ABD Academy. This led to a series of elite teams being built: the ABD Bulldogs, that were specifically designed to play at the highest competitive level and attend showcases around the country to show off their talents to college and professional scouts.

Today the Bulldogs offer programs suited to each age group, from basic skills development for junior players, advanced skill and position training for middle school age players, to advanced skills, mental approach and college preparation for high school players.

My son was an excellent hitter when he was twelve, but he struggled once he went up to the bigger field. He kept fighting, but he was ready to quit baseball after two frustrating years. I heard about Ernie from a friend and decided we should at least be open to a hitting coach. On our first night seeing the kids work with Ernie, we were amazed how hard he got the kids to hit and the positive reinforcement he constantly provided. My son got excited about the prospects of working with Ernie (a big change from being ready to quit the game). We have been working with Ernie for the past couple of months and my son completely believes he can now reach his full potential as a hitter. He is looking forward to again trying out for his high school team.

Ernie has been a significant help to both my son's. His eye and the way he can communicate the message elevate both the mental and physical abilities of my son's. Max ( age 15 ) is more confident at the plate than ever and his swing looks awesome. Dominic ( age 11 ) has been brought to a level far and above where he had been and it's due to Ernie's expertise. Both the boy's rave about Ernie and can't wait to go work out with him.

It doesn't take long when observing Coach Sariñana to notice two main points: 1) his vast knowledge of the game of baseball; and 2) his interest in seeing each individual player on his team develop sound baseball and life skills. It is apparent that his philosophy emphasizes a strong team framework with the success of each player, whatever his level, and the whole team in mind. He is strong in team discipline, noting that when one player is out of line, it impacts the entire team. I have, however, never once heard him say something negative to any player or to the group. He does provide constructive criticism in a positive manner in terms of helping a player develop appropriate skills. His approach is to work with each player at the level that individual is at, with one common attribute - his respect for each player. I recommend Coach Sarinana because I know he possesses the right qualities that will inspire a group of ball players, of which my son is one, instilling not just fine baseball skills, but more importantly, skills that will reflect positively on their life development.

Ernie's approach to teaching is the antithesis to those coaches who use the cookie cutter approach to teaching hitting. He takes the individual and builds on his strengths and carefully and methodically eliminates his weaknesses while at the same time building the player's confidence. It has been a pleasure watching him transform my son in just 3 months from someone who was afraid to miss the ball into someone who looks forward to hitting it hard. Ernie breaks down hitting to it's simplest terms and eliminates the mechanical approach to hitting that has become so commonplace. The atmosphere he provides is positive and he makes baseball fun. My 14 year old son has made significant strides as a hitter in these last months, but the biggest transformation has been in his attitude where he now looks forward to batting practice and baseball as a whole. To me that is priceless. I look forward to what is to come.

I can neither praise nor compliment Ernie enough. He takes a genuine personal interest in all the kids to make sure they achieve their dreams in baseball. You can see Ernie's love for the game and his job in what he does every day. My son Brent came to the SJBTC four months ago having basically never played before. The progress he has made has been amazing. Last week he made his High School team and we owe most of that credit to Ernie. We will always remember this. Thanks for all the help!
